Dixon asked:

I bought a house 3 years ago with this old, ugly cast iron security bars over the windows. They are screwed in by these screws that are designed to not turn counter-clockwise as the edges of the slot where the screwdriver would push is filed off. How do I get them off?

Drill off the heads of the screws.

You should be able to go to your local hardware store and purchase a special drill bit that you can drill through the ***** and take the ***** out. Its like for when you have a stripped ***** and cant get it out it just keeps turning. I know I got my dad some for x-mas once but I cant remember the name of them.

Grind off the heads, remove the bar(s) and back out the remaining threaded part of the screw

Hire a Theif, just kidding, You will need to grind the ***** heads off with a weld grinder, don’t use a cut off torch. Be sure to wet the area down and keep a spray bottle of water with you incase the wood gets to dry. get some one to help you. See if the neighbors or a house reclaim center will buy them off of you.

Cut a deeper screwdriver slot with a dremel tool and cut off wheel. Or, you can get them started a little by using a center punch and hammer, until you can get a vise-grip on them.

Be persistant- there are lots of ways to beat those screws. I like the dremel trick best.

Yeah, Try dremeling a slot into them, thats how I defeated the lockout bolts on a ford bronco.
