Can someone please tell me what happens when you go through security at the airport? I’m flying for the first time tomorrow and I want to know what to expect. Thanks!!

Not that big of a deal! Try to take as little as possible on your person, for you might end up throwing it away!

You have to take your jacket, shoes off and put all of your belongings in a basket. They will run it through some scanning thing and you will be checked with a metal detector… not a big deal. At international airports the check will take longer and out of the US as well since they seem to check much more than over here.

You will have to provide them with photo ID and your boarding pass – you will most likely have to remove your shoes – put everything in the bins they provide which are then sent through the scanner – if they find something questionable, they will take you to the side. You will also walk through a scanner, belt buckles, LARGE costume jewelry can set it off – travel simply – lotions and gels must be in 3 oz. containrs only and placed in a clear plastic bag (I put all that kind of stuff in my checked luggage – and never have issues at security). Just watch everyone else, you’ll be fine.

This varies by airport.
Generally, you will submit your checked baggage to security personnel, who will x-ray them for any type of explosive material or contraband. You will not touch these bags again until your destination.
Your carryon luggage will also be x-rayed and you will pass through a metal detector. Your shoes will likely be x-rayed at the same time. A screener may pass a metal-detection wand over your body to check for any pieces of metal that you might be carrying.
In the extreme case, you could be subject to a pat-down search, but this does not happen often.
As long as you don’t carry anything that would raise alarms, you should be ok.
DO NOT PLACE UNDEVELOPED FILM IN YOUR CHECKED LUGGAGE! You will ruin it.

In the US:
First, you check in with your airline. Depending on the airport (and the terminal at some) you will take your checked baggage over to a TSA screening location to get your checked baggage screened.
After your bag is screened, you can go to the security checkpoint. Here, you must remove your shoes, jacket, and any metal and place them in a bin. Your carry on bags must also go on the X-Ray belt. All large electronics, such as laptops, camcorders, and video game consoles (non-portable, such as a Xbox 360 or a PS3) must be taken out of the bag and placed in a seperate bin.
If the metal detector alarms when you walk through, you are given an extra chance to put any metal on your person into a bin on the X-Ray belt. A second alarm sends you to secondary screening.
If you get put in secondary screening (either from two alarms or if you are randomly chosen), you will be taken to a chair in the checkpoint by a TSO. You should always keep your carry on items in your view at all times. You will then be scanned by a Hand Held Metal Detector. If that sounds off, the officer will ask you to remove any metal in the area. If you have no loose metal, they will pat down that area to make sure there isn’t anything dangerous. Once they finish, they will pat down your lower torso and back and you will be done.
If something in your bags catches the eye of the X-Ray operator, a TSO will take your bag and move it over to a screening table after you collect the rest of your belongings. Then, while you are there, they will search your bag until they find what the X-Ray operator was looking at. They may rescan your bag at a different angle to verify that nothing else is in the bag.

Don’t worry, as long as you don’t have any weapons or explosives, this will be the least of your problems. There are several attendants on hand to assist you if you have any questions. However, I will give you a run down of what to expect and a few tips to make it an easy process.
Keep your ID (state issued for domestic, passport for international) and your boarding pass handy; you will be asked to show these documents a few times.
Remove all metal objects from your pockets and place them in your carryon or in the tray security provides you. If you have a laptop in your carry on it will need to go on a seperate tray.
Remove your shoes too.
Place all your carry items and metal objects on the conveyor belt to be examined by the xray.
You walk-thru the metal detector. If no metal objects are found you collect your belongings and proceed to your departure gate. If metal objects are located, will be asked to walk-thru again. Make sure you give yourself a quick pat down for anything you forgot.
If the metal detector finds metal objects a second time, you will have to proceed to the area where more detailed searches commence. Don’t worry, it isn’t a cavity search like the first day in jail (not saying I have been). A security officer will give you a pat down and “wand” you to find the metal object. Once located, you will be allowed to proceed to the gate.
Trust me, the worst part is waiting in line.
